MCT presented at the Environmental Defence Society Landscape Conference – Through New Eyes in August 2019. We gave a community perspective on protecting natural and cultural landscapes, and our vision for the Mackenzie Drylands Heritage Area.
The Mackenzie Drylands Heritage Area is a project we are working on in collaboration with DOC and the Treaty partner.
We hope the Mackenzie Drylands Heritage Area can protect and celebrate, not just the natural history but the Māori, pastoral, electricity generation, recreation and tourism history in the Mackenzie Basin and how they interact. By celebrating the rich history of the communities and whanau in the Basin we hope to foster partners for conservation and better land management and realise the vision of the Mackenzie Agreement.
The Trust is particularly interested in how we can incentivise landowners and farmers to voluntarily participate in the Mackenzie Drylands Heritage Area. Over the coming months we will be seeking community and stakeholder input on the Mackenzie Drylands Heritage Area and how we better protect and celebrate what makes the Mackenzie Basin iconic.
